How to choose the best UGC video service for a DTC brand

Creator marketplaces, creator platforms, AI avatar tools and filmed production services all sell UGC video. Here is how they differ, and the questions that sort them for a DTC brand.

If you run a DTC brand, you've probably been pitched four different ways to get UGC video this year: a creator marketplace, a creator platform with campaign tools, an AI avatar app, and a production service that films it for you. They all promise "authentic content." They work very differently, and the best one for you depends on how much of the process you want to run yourself and what your videos have to show.

The four ways to buy UGC video

Creator marketplaces

You post a brief, independent creators apply, you pick the ones you like and ship each of them your product. The marketplace handles payment and contracts, and you approve what comes back. You get lots of faces and a low starting price per video. You also get the work of choosing, briefing and following up with every creator. Our JoinBrands comparison walks through that model in detail.

Creator platforms

Platforms add campaign tools on top of a creator network: influencer outreach, partnership ads, Spark Ads, sometimes a managed service. They suit a brand that's building a creator program with a budget and a person to run it. You usually pay for the platform and then for each creator. Our Insense comparison covers how that differs from ordering finished videos.

AI UGC tools

You type a script, pick an AI avatar, upload a product photo and get a video in minutes. It's cheap per video and fast, which makes it handy for testing hooks in many languages. It struggles with the exact thing a product demo needs: a hand really holding and using the product, with the label readable in every frame. TikTok, Meta and YouTube also label AI-generated content. OrderUGC vs AI UGC tools lays out where each one makes sense.

Production services

A production service films the video for you. At OrderUGC, our own actors film your product at our studio, from a script our team writes and you approve, and our editors cut it. Prices are fixed per video. You don't pick from applicants or chase anyone, and the trade-off is less choice of faces than a marketplace with thousands of creators.

What to check before you choose

Whichever model you lean toward, ask these questions. The answers sort the options faster than any feature list.

When a filmed service is the right fit for a DTC brand

A production service makes most sense when you want a known price and a known date, your product has to be handled on camera to sell, and nobody on your team has time to run creators. That describes a lot of small DTC teams: a founder, a marketer and a backlog of ad concepts.

Here's what that looks like at OrderUGC:

When another option fits better

Choose a marketplace or platform if you want dozens of different creators, need creators to post on their own accounts, or are running Spark Ads, partnership ads or a TikTok Shop affiliate program. Choose an AI tool if you need many cheap variations quickly and the product doesn't have to be handled on camera. Plenty of brands combine them: they test hooks with AI and film the winners with real people.

The short version

Decide what the video has to prove. If it has to show a real person using your real product, it has to be filmed. If you'd rather not manage creators to get it, a production service is the simplest route. Filmed, not generated explains why we don't use AI actors, and you can order a video in a few minutes without an account until you pay.
